De Klerk Foundation reacts to Ramaphosa victory

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The FW De Klerk Foundation says newly-elected ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa faces major challenges due to the ANC Top six representing two factions.

It notes that Gwede Mantashe and Paul Mashatile are in Ramaphosa’s camp,  while the other three, David Mabuza,  Jessie Duarte and Ace Makgashule are seen as backers of his rival Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation, Theuns Eloff says although the nation is pinning its hopes on Ramaphosa to deal with corruption, he has his work cut out.

“His campaign ticket was one that was based on constitutional values, on anti-corruption, on state capture, on inclusive growth. I think one can congratulate him on his election. Secondly, it is a big challenge to him to decide what he will do in terms of the court order that he should appoint the National Director of Public Prosecutions. I think that will bring him in direct confrontation with the president of the country.”
