Democratic Alliance(DA) leader, John Steenhuisen says his party will not go into a coalition that will involve the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Tshwane and Johannesburg Metros.

Steenhuisen was speaking during a virtual briefing on Saturday morning.

He says the DA will rather be a strong opposition party in the metro than join what he termed a chaotic coalition.

According to Steenhuisen, they will on Monday put forward Dr Mpho Phalatse as the DA’s mayoral candidate in Johannesburg and Randall Williams in Tshwane.

“We will not go into chaotic minority coalitions that depended on EFF to stay in power. We would rather be principled, strong and effective opposition than being in government at all cost, especially when we know we will not be able to govern unless we dance to the tune of our arch opponents in the EFF. And where we enter into coalitions with opponents that have a chance of succeeding, we will support a representative of the largest party as the mayoral candidate,” says Steenhuisen.
