The DA has laid fresh charges of corruption and bribery against embattled Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille at the Cape Town central police station.

The charges relate to alleged attempts by De Lille to solicit a R5 million bribe from a businessman from Vanderbijlpark in 2012.

She allegedly sought the money in exchange for her support of his business venture to supply fire extinguishers to informal settlements in the City.

Chairperson of the DA Federal Council James Selfe says they have to investigate if an affidavit has been provided.

He says: “Our duty in terms of the organised crime act is that when an allegation of that nature is brought to our attention, we are required to report that to the police and so we did.”

“Prior to doing that, we advised Patricia De Lille’s attorneys so that she’s in a position to both know about the allegations and to defend herself if necessary,” adds Selfe.
