DA denies that it undermined the IEC’s credibility

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has denied that it undermined the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) credibility to deliver a free and fair election.

This after the party penned a letter to the United States and several other nations requesting them to come and oversee 29th of May elections.

The US Embassy reacted to the request in a statement that it has no reason to doubt South Africa’s electoral system.

DA’s Shadow Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Emma Powell says the DA’s move was not meant to cast any aspersions on the IEC.

“There is absolutely no aspersion being cast on the IEC at a structural level. The deployment of additional independent domestic observers as well as the deployment of international monitors is standard practice in democracies across the world. We’ve asked that these resources are deployed not to our party or to any specific party, but to civil society organizations, and of course, the request I think it’s most important here is that any technological resources that can help to protect South Africa from sinister attempts.”

The official opposition has since received backlash following its letter from different sectors.
