Court upholds KwaZulu-Natal ANC conference nullification

The High Court in Pietermaritzburg has upheld the nullification of the 2015 KwaZulu-Natal ANC elective conference.

However, the court has granted the provincial Provincial Elective Conference leave to appeal the decision.

Last month the court reserved judgment in the PEC’s application for leave to appeal the September court ruling that nullified the 2015 provincial conference as well as some branches’ application for a court order removing the PEC from office.

Tokyo Mataboge and 39 others wanted the court to set aside the outcome of the ANC’s September regional elective conference. Part of their argument was that if the outcome were not set aside illegitimate delegates would attend the national elective conference which starts at Nasrec in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The ANC Secretary General, Gwede Mantashe, says recent decisions from the courts are not a major blow to the 54th ANC elective conference.

The court disqualified close to 40 delegates from the North West and 27 PEC members from Kwazulu-Natal.
The credentials of the delegates to the conference, may dominate the first day of the agenda.
