The Council of Education Ministers has suspended all contact sport in schools with immediate effect. The decision was taken in a virtual meeting on Wednesday morning as a result of the increasing COVID-19 infections in the country.

Non-contact sports training in schools can continue provided all safety measures are observed and that there is no physical contact between participants during training.

Basic Education Spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, says the aim of the decision is to slow down the spread of COVID-19.

“If it’s happening in all parts of the province, and groups of learners participating in sports activities get infected, the number could be more than what has been reported because those learners at the end of the day, they go back to their families and the spread then continues from there. So, we need to try to contribute in the fight against COVID-19, especially after seeing that the health and safety protocols followed in schools have not assisted.”
