The Consumer Commission has urged people in possession of Similac Alimentum 400-gram infant formula to immediately discontinue using the product and to return it for a refund.

The commission says the imported product has been recalled locally as a precaution.

This after four cases in the US in which infants presented symptoms of ingesting Cronomacter and Salmonella such as diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps.

The manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories, informed the commission that the presence of Cronobacter and Salmonella micro organisms is a cause for concern.

Ingesting Salmonella may lead to diarrhoea, fever and abdominal cramps, and Cronobacter infection may also cause damage to the bowl system.
