Chaos erupts in National Assembly Programme Committee virtual meeting

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Chaos erupted once again in the National Assembly’s Programme Committee virtual meeting. This after concerns were raised that some members use the committee’s chat group to throw personal insults at each other.

DA Chief Whip Natasha Mazonne, who had an incident with EFF MP Natasha Ntlangwini, was accused of using the chat group to mock and insult EFF Members every time she disagrees with them in a meeting. When Secretary to the National Assembly Masibulele Xaso suggested that the chat group be closed temporarily, chaos erupted as Mazonne and another EFF MP, Hlengiwe Mkhalipi took on one another in the meeting.

National Assembly Speaker and Programme Committee Chairperson Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula intervened and Mazonne and Mkhalipi were reprimanded for their behaviour.

“No honourable members, we are adults here. Not only are we adults. We are leaders of our parties. I do not think we should conduct ourselves in the manner in which we are doing honourable Mkhalipi and honourable Mazonne. I do not think it’s correct to use the kind of language (that) you are using on this platform. We are honourable members. Not only are we sitting here in this meeting. This meeting tends to be very bleak and I know that it is an open meeting and therefore you also have people who are not necessarily coming from political parties who joined this meeting, for instance from members of the media. I do not think it’s correct of us to conduct ourselves in such an irresponsible manner,” says Mapisa-Nqakula.
