Calls for free and fair elections in Kenya

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Kenya’s two main Presidential candidates have wrapped up their campaigns ahead of elections on Tuesday. While incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta appealed for peace during and after the polls, his rival Raila Odinga said the opposition will not accept the results if the elections are not free, fair and credible.

Thousands of Uhuru Kenyatta gathered at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru town, one of his strongholds. Here, he asked voters to judge him by his development track record, citing roads, the Chinese funded Standard Gauge Railway and free maternity care in the East African country. He urged his supporters to keep peace before and after the polls.

In Nairobi, thousands of cheering supporters were at the Uhuru Park, where Odinga pledged to fight corruption, reduce the cost of living and create more jobs.

Odinga who is running for a fourth time was however categorical that he will not accept the results if the elections are rigged.

About 19.6 million people are registered to vote. This is the second time that Kenyatta and Odinga are facing each other.

The winning candidate must get at least 50% plus one of the total votes cast and also secure 25% of the total votes cast in 23 counties.
