The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Northern Cape electoral officer head, says three political parties are contesting the by-elections.

By-elections are under way in Ward 28 in the Sol Plaatje Municipality in Kimberley.

The ward was left vacant after a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor resigned and joined the African National Congress (ANC).

The Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Northern Cape electoral officer Bonolo Modise says three political parties are contesting the by-elections.

“Today in Ward 28 at Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, there’s by-elections to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of a councillor who at the time represented Democratic Alliance.”

“The three parties that are contesting this by election; that is the ANC, the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). So far it is calm, voters are coming in. I’ve seen queues of voters who are standing peacefully waiting to cast their votes,” adds Modise.
