Elections 2019: Better Residents Association

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Party abbreviation: BRA

In the 2019 Elections, the Better Residents Association (BRA), formerly known as the Bushbuckridge Residents Association, will be contesting the National elections in all nine provinces, as well as the provincial elections in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

BRA was founded in 2011 by former disgruntled ANC who left the party because they felt they were being marginalised. The party’s leader is Delta Mokoena, but is currently in prison. He began serving a 10-year prison sentence in 2017 after being convicted of vigilantism in 2013. The candidate at the top of the party’s list for the National Assembly is Letago Cleopatra Mokoena.

Manifesto: Information not available at time of publication.

BRA contested in the 2014 National and Provincial elections, as well as the 2016 Municipal elections.

BRA won one seat in Mpumalanga from the 2014 Provincial elections. The party won its first seats at local government level in the 2011 Municipal elections. It also has seats in the Bushbuckridge and Bela-Bela local municipalities, following the 2016 Municipal elections.

In 2013, Delta Mokoena was convicted of vigilantism after threatening to burn a resident and his house if the man didn’t leave the area, after he accused the man’s son of being a thief. He is currently in prison.

BRA has been accused of resorting to tactics of intimidation and violence against political opponents and residents suspected of unproven offences.
