14 people die in a head-on collision between two taxis in the Free State

Fourteen people have died following a head-on collision between two minibus taxis in the Free State.

The collision happened on the R57 between Reitz and Petrus Steyn road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police Spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele says thirteen people died on the scene.

Provincial Emergency Medical Services Spokesperson, Sipho Towa says one of the four people who were seriously injured died in hospital.

Towa says the road has been opened to traffic.

Meanwhile, Free State police say a case of culpable homicide is being in1vestigated.

Makhele says the names of all deceased involved in a crash are unknown at this stage including the whereabouts of their next of kin.

“The white VW crafter with FS (Free State Province ) registration was on its way to Gauteng province from Ficksburg, [it] had a male driver who died instantly on the scene. The second white vehicle was a Toyota Quantam with a GP (Gauteng Province) registration which was from Pretoria to Fouriesburg, carried 11 passengers and [the] driver also dies instantly on scene, Other four passengers were taken to Dihlabeng and Nketoana hospitals for medical treatment for sustaining serious injuries,” says Makhele.
