The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape says it is concerned about what it calls the inhumane evictions of students at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). This follows clashes between students and campus security. UWC has since said the students are being relocated to alternative accommodation.

The students in question wanted to remain in their residences over the festive season, even though the university is closed. The university had said it wanted to deep clean the residences.

“We note and welcome the successful interdict by the courts on further evictions until the university finds alternative accommodation for the students. We also welcome efforts at mediation to bring a more sustainable solution to this challenge. To this effect, the ANC will deploy its leadership to UWC on Tuesday 28 December 2021 to attend to this matter and find a lasting solution,” ANC spokesperson Sifiso Mtsweni explains.
