Ten suspects, including a senior Eastern Cape government official are expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court in connection with a R600 million tender fraud case.

The Hawks arrested 10 suspects on Thursday in connection with a tender for toilets in the province, following a complaint by the National Treasury.

Treasury discovered that they had allegedly colluded in accessing the Amathole District Municipality funds through flaunting procurement processes.

An investigation by the Hawks also revealed that R286 million of the tender amount had already be paid to the suspects before it could be awarded.

Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale says, “Raids took place in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal by multiple disciplinary teams which included crime intelligence and SAPS.”

“All 10 suspects will appear in the East London Magistrate Court on charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering and in the terms of prevention of organized crime Acts, said Mogale.”
