Northern Cape police have opened a case of culpable homicide following an accident involving African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament, Mxolisi Sokatsha, on the N12 road, 20 kilometres outside Belmont on Friday night.
Sokatsha, a former MEC in four provincial departments, died at the scene. The accident also claimed the life of another person.
Four people who survived the accident including two children aged 9 and 11 were taken to hospital.
“In the Ranger, there were two occupants, the driver age 56 who unfortunately died on the scene. His passenger was injured and was transported to the hospital in Kimberley for medical treatment. In the Fortuner, there was a family of four, a mother, father and two children – a girl age 11, a boy 9. However, the mother died on the scene of the accident. The girl was airlifted by a helicopter for medical treatment to a hospital in Kimberley. The father and son were transported by an ambulance to Kimberley for medical treatment,” says Mashay Gamildien, provincial Police spokesperson.
Meanwhile, the presiding officers of Parliament have expressed shock at the death of Sokatsha.
“Parliament and the people of this country have been robbed of a devoted public representative with an untiring commitment to the service of the people. In his passing, we have not only lost an astute legislator, but a true leader, patriot, and servant who always went the extra mile to serve his people,” says a statement.
