Correctional Services’ COVID-19 cases rise to 700

Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has a total of 700 COVID-19 cases with 229 officials and 471 inmates. This comes after Western Cape recorded an additional of eight officials and one inmate.

The province has 189 cases and 2 deaths.

14 inmates and two officials located in the Eastern Cape have tested positive for the virus. The province has the highest number of cases with 487 and 2 deaths.

The department currently has 137 recoveries.

Westville Prison

Reports of a prison warder allegedly infected with COVID-19 is causing alarm at Westville Prison in Durban. The warder, who resides in a staff facility within the prison, is understood to have left his quarantine area and resumed duties without informing doctors or prison officials.

Earlier, the Health Ministry announced that South Africa has 19 137 coronavirus cases. 30 more deaths have been reported. The Western Cape still has the highest number of cases, 12 153.
