Chicken challenge to assist abuse victims

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Artists are lending a helping hand to the victims of sexual abuse in Mbombela. They are taking part in the chicken challenge which involves creating artwork shaped in the form of a chicken. It’s then sold online to benefit abused victims.

36-year-old Lerato – not her real name – was abused by her boyfriend for years.

Lerato is among hundreds of women assisted by GRIP, a non-profit organisation which helps victims of rape and abuse.

The organisation relies on funds to help those in need.

“What we are trying to do is get funding from other sources… like you’ve seen, the chicken challenge is part of the money that we use for women in the shelter and at our GRIP care rooms. Women come there first, and this is almost like the end result, but not quite. So, we try to do is that they get skilled,” said GRIP CEO, Sakina Mohamod.

The monies raised will be donated to GRIP, to help women like Lerato get back on her feet so she too can care for others.
