Reading Time: < 1 minute

Religious leaders and several NGOs led a march to Parliament on Wednesday.

They demanded the downgrading of diplomatic ties with the state of Israel.

Speakers condemned US President Donald Trump’s announcement of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Scores of protesters were voicing disapproval of Trump’s decision.

They want South Africa to cut diplomatic ties with Israel. The protesters argue that Trump’s declaration countered international consensus and undermined international laws.

Sheik Imam Alexander of the Gatesville Mosque says: “We want the ANC among others to adopt a resolution that downgrades diplomatic ties with Israel and support Palestine by calling for sanctions against the government of Israel. They also want the public condemnation of Donald Trump.”

Other church leaders from Christian, Jewish and other religious groups also criticised Trump.

They argued that the Palestinian crisis was neither a Christian nor Muslim issue, but a human rights challenge.

Actions and other events are planned throughout the country in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

A lunchtime demonstration will be held outside the US consulate in Sandton on Thursday.
