Nzimande, Nsfas to give an update on funding applications

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Blade Nzimande and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) board chairperson Ernest Khosa will this afternoon give an update on the opening of the scheme’s funding applications for the 2024 academic year.

They will also announce the changes made to improve the Nsfas funding application portal.

The funding scheme has been grappling with a number of challenges including the students’ payment delays and the axing of the CEO Andile Nongogo following a damning investigation.

Meanwhile, students under the banner of Student Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD) will march to the offices of the Department of Higher Education in Pretoria today.

The forum’s leader Nhongo Solo says they will hand over a memorandum in which they are demanding that Nzimande scrap Nsfas as it has failed students.

“Today, we are saying Blade (Nzimande) must refrain from launching the open applications of Nsfas for 2024. We are advising all students to actually boycott that application because what must then happen is that the Department of Higher Education must adopt the same financial method system of the basic education where money moves from Treasury directly to institutions.”
