The City of Cape Town says they are expecting an influx of complaints regarding fireworks with the upcoming Guy Fawkes celebration and Diwali festival.

The city says the public will need permits to discharge fireworks.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith warned the public that the import and sale of fireworks without the necessary permission is illegal.

“In the run up to Diwali and Guy Fawkes residents are reminded that there are no designated sites for the setting off of fireworks and that permits are required for firework displays.”

Meanwhile, the North Coast Deepavali Celebration in Durban is gearing up for a special festival of lights.

The Mount Edgecombe Art and Cultural Council will host the free event at the Siphosethu primary school grounds next month.

The event will take place ahead of Deepavali or Diwali on November the 12th.

The council’s chairperson Neermala Thool, “This year, 2023 Diwali, we want to go bigger and better, then we spread our wings and we said let’s reach out to the President, Premier, we not stopping at anything. We have other dignitaries attending as well.”
