Calls for fireworks banning during Diwali

A handful of protesters have staged a demonstration outside a Hindu Temple at Phoenix north of Durban calling for a ban of the use of fireworks or big bangs during Diwali – or the Hindu religious festival of lights.

Diwali is being celebrated this weekend.

Organiser and spokesperson Prathna Singh says they are opposed to the use of exploding fireworks – or big bangs – because they cause fear, trauma, injury and some cases even death.

According to Singh exploding fireworks are an outdated concept of commemorating events or celebrating festivities.

“A lot of people just say sedate your dog and keep them inside but it’s not only your pets that get affected. The noise of fireworks can severely affect elderly people and sick babies too.”
