Judge Johannes Daffue denies BLA allegations levelled against him

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Judge Johannes Daffue has denied allegations by the Black Lawyers Association (BLA) that he said attorneys should not be judges.

Daffue says he has previously called for black attorneys to receive training to become judges.

Daffue is one of six candidates appearing before the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for interviews to fill four vacancies at the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA).

This week, the JSC will interview 34 candidates for judicial vacancies across the country.

When probed on the accusations levelled by the Black Lawyers Association, Daffue listed the instances where he has called for transformation in the judiciary.

“The reason that I became a chair of the Free State Society of Advocates was because of the way that I tried, my colleagues, to understand that it is high time for attorneys to become judges. I can, for example, tell you what I’ve said when I was introduced … welcome to the bench,” adds Daffue.

“I said we’ve got to make sure that we improve the skills of all our black colleagues, so that the pool must be increased and so that there is more of them that can become judges. The lack of chances of our black people to get their practices as attorneys off the ground and we must improve their skills.”
