SA records 23 884 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported  23 884 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 204 642. This increase represents a 34.9% positivity rate.

The majority of new cases are from Gauteng (36%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (22%).

A further 24 COVID-19 related deaths have also been reported, bringing total fatalities to 90 172 to date. 

20 352 343 tests have been conducted in both the public and private sectors.

Human behaviour

The Free State Health Department says human behaviour is largely behind the surge in new COVID-19 infections.

The department is also concerned about the low turnout among the youth for vaccinations.

In the past few days, the province has recorded double the normal daily number of COVID-19 infections.
