21 867 people vaccinated on Sunday

Weekend vaccination rates have remained low despite the Vooma Vaccination campaign, with 21 867 people getting vaccinated on Sunday.

The Health Department says 80% of those who got vaccinated were fully vaccinated with either the single shot of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine or the second dose of the Pfizer shot.

A total of close to ten million adults in South Africa have been fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, government is hoping to get 70% of the adult population vaccinated by the end of the year.

Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) senior researcher Ridhwaan Suliman says more South Africans need to get vaccinated.

South Africa has reported 648 new COVID-19 cases, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 912 145. This increase represents a 2.9% positivity rate.

A further 25 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 88 317 to date.
