1 995 new coronavirus cases reported in SA

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 1 995 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 677 686.  This increase represents a 7.5% positivity rate.

The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng Province (37%), followed by Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, each accounting for 21% and 17%, respectively.

The institute says there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health

“Today, the NDoH (National Department of Health reports 28 deaths, and of these, five occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 99 458 to date,” says the institute in a statement.

23 138 425 tests have been conducted in both the public and private sectors.
