Springs family to pay abused worker compensation – SAHRC

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) wants the Springs family in the east of Johannesburg that allegedly racially abused and forced their worker to drink liquid human faeces to pay him R100 000 in compensation.

The commission is representing the complainant Joseph Mona in the case brought before the Equality court sitting at the Springs Magistrates court in Gauteng’s East Rand.

37 years old Mona is seeking a public apology and monetary compensation for his alleged ordeal.   In December last year, the family allegedly forced Mona drink litres of faeces before attempting to drown him in a septic tank on their plot in Springs.

The Human Rights Commission claims that the Springs family used the K-work against Mona which it finds offensive and socially unacceptable. The commission says this shows that there is still a long way to go before South Africa liberates itself of the scourge of racism.

The Commission’s Buamg Jones said Mona’s torture and racial abuse cannot be accepted in this day and age. Jones has called on the Equality court to order that the family publicly apologise to Mona and pay him R100 000 Rand in compensation.
