Eastern Cape police have arrested over 80 people at Elliotdale for allegedly using fake permits to travel in 10 minibus taxis from the Western Cape.

Transport Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says the taxis were ferrying seasonal workers from farms around Ceres in the Western Cape.

He says transport lockdown regulations were violated.

Binqose says, “Health teams were called to examine them. They’re under quarantine to establish if they carry the virus or not. They will face some charges.”

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has called on members of the public to refrain from purchasing and using fake permits to move around during the lockdown period.

This comes after a 41-year-old man was arrested in Diepkloof, Soweto in connection with producing fake essential services as well as motor vehicle licensing documents.

Community Safety Spokesperon Ofentse Morwane says, “We are happy about what has been done by our law enforcement in arresting a 41 year old man in Diepkloof Soweto for printing fraudulent COVID-19 lockdown essential services permits.”

“This is an act of fraud. We take this opportunity to call on members of the public not to purchase and use fraudulent documents because they are going to be arrested,” added Morwane.

He says people should rather stay at home and comply with all lockdown regulations.
