Police Minister Bheki Cele has called on the public to work with police to improve safety in crime-ridden areas. He was speaking at the house of the late Constable Ncedo Katoyi in Mfuleni, near Blue Downs in the Western Cape.
Katoyi was gunned down earlier this week.
Cele says they are making progress in the investigation of the murder of Constable Katoyi. He has urged the public to come forward with any information they may have that can assist police as they hunt for Katoyi’s killers.
The 39-year-old constable was shot and killed by six unidentified suspects while he and another police officer were responding to a complaint at Site C, in Khayelitsha.
Cele was also taken to the crime scene before visiting the Katoyi family to pay his respects.
The Hawks are investigating Katoyi’s murder.
Meanwhile, National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole says the discovery of a drugs manufacturing lab in Orlando West in Soweto is the result of improved crime intelligence gathering.
Police raided the property just after midnight following a tip-off from the community. Residents say no one lives in the house but they have seen one person going in and out of the property.
Commissioner Sithole has praised police for the breakthrough in the fight against drugs.
“This breakthrough means we have been able to chop the supply of drugs.”
