Reading Time: 2 minutes

Newly appointed Police Minister Bheki Cele has paid homage to the police officers who were shot and killed in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape as fallen heroes. Cele was making his maiden speech as the new Police Minister in the National Assembly.

He spoke highly of the police officers who were involved in the incident.

“These brave man and their families shared the commitments, and sometimes bigger than themselves. They were committed compatriots and sometimes committed to the services of protecting South Africans. For that they had to pay the supreme price by losing their lives in the line of duty. For that we salute these fallen heroes of South Africa. We give them the maximum gratitude to their families and loved ones.”

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) says killings of police officers should be classified as a crime against the state.

Party leader Kenneth Meshoe says it’s high time that government takes charge in combating brutal murders of police like the incident in Ngcobo.

“The ACDP wants to believe that the murder of men and women who are trained to protect both the state and its citizens should be classified as a crime against the state that should carry with it automatically a life sentence with no option for parole. Government must be hard and must be seen to be hard when dealing with the criminals. Criminals must fear arrest, otherwise government will be failing to do its most fundamental duty to protect its citizens.”
