Amcu ‘hit men’ case back in N West court

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The bail application of eight men accused of hatching a plan to eliminate Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) leadership in Marikana, North West is expected to continue in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The former Amcu members are charged with conspiracy to murder and attempted murder.

The State alleges that the accused were expelled from Amcu as leaders, the union appointed new leaders and the group plotted to ‘take them out of office’.

On March 29, the court heard that three hit men were hired in the Eastern Cape to kill Amcu leaders in Marikana and how union leader Joseph Mathunjwa allegedly protected leaders implicated in corruption.

Prosecutor Cassius Mona told one of the accused, Mthethelethu Mtshukuka, 58, that he was part of Amcu members who plotted to kill union leaders because they were not happy in the manner former chairperson Zithobile Mangqo commonly known as David was removed from office at the Lonmin Rowland shaft in Marikana.

Mtshukuka denied attending any meeting plotting to kill union leaders and also denied knowing the union structures.

Twelve people have been arrested in this case, two of them Nkosinathi Mantashe and Samkelo Mkhutshwa were released on bail, while Zithobile Mangqo and Bongile Cingo were released on warning.
