Zungu’s teammates in France concerned about xenophobic attacks

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu has described the xenophobic attacks happening in South Africa currently as very sad and not painting the country in good light.

Zungu is part of the Bafana Bafana camp that was scheduled to play against Madagascar in an international friendly match at Orlando stadium on Saturday evening. That match was cancelled on Thursday.

The French based midfielder has teammates from Mali, Cameroon, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guinea, Ivory Coast, Gabon and Zambia at Amiens in French Ligue 1. And he says they’ve been asking him about these attacks.

It was the xenophobic attacks which led to the cancellation of Bafana’s initial international friendly match in this FIFA week against Zambia in Lusaka.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) pulled a plug on that game at the request of Zambians Association in South Africa (ZASA) who felt that it wouldn’t sound right to play Bafana whilst the attack against foreign nationals was underway here.

Zungu says as players they were also getting concerned about traveling.

Zungu, who has also experienced some racist chants in France says it hasn’t been bad like the xenophobic attacks like here in the country.

He also touches on the endless questions he’s facing from his teammates on these attacks.

Meanwhile, Zungu has also welcomed the appointment of Molefi Ntseki as the new head coach of Bafana and he believes that having been working in the national team set-up for some time now, will make the job easier going forward.Report by Velile Mnyandu
