Zuma’s arrest re-affirmed rule of law: Lamola

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Justice and Correctional Services Minister, Ronald Lamola says the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma re-affirmed the rule of law. He was testifying at the Human Rights Commission’s hearings into Gauteng’s leg of the July unrest in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.

The former President was jailed for defying a Constitutional Court order to give evidence at the State Capture Inquiry.

However, Lamola says Zuma had the right to challenge the court decision. “I think whatever advisable avenues in terms of the constitution, and in terms of the prescripts of the Supreme Court and the running of our courts  – if an aggrieved party still believes in other avenues to follow, he has to do what he believes is in his right and  pursue his own right.”
