Zuma’s appeal on possible re-incarceration expected to dominate ANC NEC meeting

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A call for the African National Congress (ANC) to join former President Jacob Zuma’s appeal against his possible re-incarceration, is expected to dominate the governing party’s final National Executive Committee (NEC) for the year starting on Friday afternoon.

On Wednesday, the High Court in Pretoria ruled that Zuma’s release from prison on medical parole last month was unlawful.

It has since ordered that he be sent back to complete his 15-month jail term, but the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has vowed to lobby its mother body to join the Correctional Services Department’s decision to appeal the judgement.

The Correctional Services Department and the Jacob Zuma Foundation have vowed to seek leave to appeal the court’s decision which nullifies the department’s former commissioner Arthur Fraser’s decision to grant Zuma medical parole.

ANC KZN Provincial Secretary, Mdumiseni Ntuli says such judgements puts the ANC and its government in a predicament.

He says  their proposal will be tabled during a virtual NEC meeting which starts on Friday .

Analysis on Zuma’s medical parole judgment with Xolani Dube:

Zuma’s son, Edward Zuma, says the decision of the High Court in Pretoria to send his father back to prison is reckless.

In an exclusive interview with the SABC News on Thursday,  Edward Zuma says the decision has left him very angry.

He says the Zuma family will not be able to control his supporters.

“The decision they took yesterday (Wednesday) was very reckless. One would have expected that people would be very mindful of the fact that they are taking a decision on the eve of Reconciliation Day. All they are doing, they are just going to be making matters worse.  For whatever happens they should be held responsible,” says Edward Zuma.
