Zuma sends condolences on passing of Namibia’s Ya Toivo

President Jacob Zuma has sent condolences to the people and government of Namibia on the death of struggle activist Herman Andimba Toivo ya Toivo. He died in Windhoek on Friday at the age of 93.

He was a co-founder of the South West African People’s Organsation (Swapo) which is still the governing party in Namibia.

He was one of 36 Namibians to be arrested by South African apartheid security forces on terrorism charges in 1966 and spent 16 years on Robben Island.

After Namibia’s independence in 1990, he became a cabinet minister in the Swapo government. His memorial service will be held in Windhoek Namibia on Monday.
