Zuma reiterates government stance on nuclear deal

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Jacob Zuma has reiterated that the Nuclear New Build Programme will be undertaken at a pace and scale that the country can afford. He says government is committed to a process that is open, transparent, cost effective and competitive.

Zuma was responding in a written reply to a DA parliamentary question in the NCOP.  He says government is guided by the 1998 White Paper policy on Energy.

He says the policy aims to pursue an energy mix which includes coal, nuclear, solar, wind, gas and hydro.

Zuma added that Cabinet further endorsed the Nuclear Energy Policy of 2008. He says while the nuclear energy programme will ensure energy security, it will also reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and increase job creation opportunities.
