Zuma dominates social media trending topics

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Both news coverage and social media conversations this week have been dominated by just a handful of stories.

That’s according to social media analyst Tonya Khoury, who says the hashtag Zuma Has Fallen dominated social media at 48,3 percent in more than 24 hours.

She says this hashtag evolved from Zuma Must Fall, which has been featured as one of the top ten hashtags on social media for the past two and a half years.

Khoury says Zuma’s resignation has dominated 80 percent of social media conversations in more than 24 hours, with the Gupta’s holding their own at 10,5 percent.

“If we look at the week, it’s been a pretty busy week. Zuma’s resignation comes in at 39,2 percent of our news media and Cyril Ramaphosa comes in at 21 percent. State capture coming in at 17,9 percent. When you put those statistics together you’ve got a good 70 percent of our news media over the past seven days. But social media is completely swamped. I think one of the other stories making the charts right now is Ajay Gupta being a fugitive on the run from the law, but that’s sort of been drowned out by the new president and the ex-president.”
