Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Jacob Zuma says it’s imperative for South African women to form part of the country’s economic freedom.

He was addressing thousands of women at the national Women’s Day event at Sasolburg in the Free State.

According to President Zuma, various laws are being put in place to ensure that women can engage in socio-economic development.

“If we are to succeed economically as a country, women must participate at both the micro and macro levels of the economy. They must not be relegated to micro operations and the informal economy as has been the case. Economic freedom for women is imperative hence the various laws that we are putting in place to make the socio-economic development of women possible.”

Earlier Zuma handed over five houses in Sasolburg in the northern Free State as part of a community residential project.

In the first phase government financed a project that included 74 houses. This will be followed by a second phase which also has 74 houses.

A further development project comprises nearly 450 residential rental units in Zamdela, Sasolburg, for migrant workers. At least 128 of these units have been completed so far.
