Zondo inquiry to hear why Banks cut ties with Guptas

The Commission of Inquiry into State Capture is expected to hear the testimony of various representatives of banks when it reconvenes on Monday morning.

Chairperson of the Commission, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, will seek to establish why South African banks decided to close bank accounts belonging to the Guptas in March 2016,

FNB, Absa, Standard Bank and Nedbank announced that they would cut ties with the Gupta-owned company Oakbay.

At the time, the Gupta family was in the spotlight over controversial deals with various entities. Local banks said they were concerned about the family’s reputation.
