Zille stepping down is no surprise: ANC

Reading Time: 2 minutes

ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says Zille failed to win the past national elections and decided to pass on the baton to others to try their luck in winning the black vote.

Kodwa says Zille has reached her political ceiling.

“We don’t understand why it is a major announcement. It is natural that anybody can avail or not avail himself or herself for any position. However it’s important to note that she bows out after dismal failure to win overwhelming elections last year.

I think her view is that they are desperately looking for a black person in order to capture a black vote. And that view she believes her stepping down it will then give an opportunity for the DA to mislead our people to think that the DA represents them and is non-racial.”

Zille says she decided to step down as leader of the party to avoid a debilitating leadership contest. She says while she believes the decision is slightly early she wanted to give the next leader enough time to prepare for the 2019 elections.

She says she didn’t want the party to be distracted by a leadership contest. “To avoid a debilitating leadership contest for two years – and distract us …To speak to the people….. Short and shaper election for a successor – it will be a team to do the job ..”
