As the country commemorates Youth Day, it also marks the centenary celebrations of Albertina Sisulu this year.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on youth and all South Africans to use Youth Month to honour the sacrifices made by the likes of Mama Sisulu

Sisulu was one of the guiding lights during 1976 and nurtured the generation of youth leaders.

In 1976, when Soweto was burning and children dying, Sisulu emerged and filled the void that was left by the forceful exiling and imprisonment of leaders like Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and others.

Former student leader, Chreyl Carolus says, “She [Mama Sisulu] was someone who always cared about women and grew young women leadership in a way that has pulled all of us in to the main stream.”

ANC Deputy Secretary, Jessie Duarte says she was fortunate to be amongst young women who were trained by Sisulu.

Sisulu was an anti-apartheid activist and a wife to activist, Walter Sisulu. She died at her Linden home in Johannesburg on June 2, 2011.
