A R20 million state of the art youth centre has been unveiled at KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage to address challenges around social ills in the area.

The centre aims to create a meaningful impact on the lives of the youth and provide them with job opportunities as well as skills. The centre also seeks to curb the spread of HIV/Aids amongst youth in the metro by providing educational facilities on the subject.

KwaNobuhle has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the metro. Pamela Baleka is one of the unemployed residents that will be looking for job opportunities using the newly constructed centre. She hopes that the centre will address problems of unemployment especially amongst the youth in her township.

Baleka says the centre must provide the youth with job opportunities. “Most young people stand on the streets and resort to crime. This building is long overdue. We want jobs and skills.”
Over 20 000 youths are set to benefit from the outreach programmes.

The Department of Health in the province has applauded the private sector for the meaningful role they have played in the fight against HIV/Aids in South Africa.

Health MEC, Sicelo Gqobana says: “We, as government, have committed ourselves in the fight against HIV/Aids, hence we always opt to work very closely with private sector to show our commitment. This centre will play a big role in terms of job opportunities for the people of Kwanobuhle.”

Volkswagen Group Managing Director, David Powels says, “We have six pillars. We want to develop and encourage young people to be aware of these challenges. Ours is to create awareness and employment. Currently, we employ more people as much as we can, hence we saw an opportunity to invest money towards youth on Kwanobuhle.”
