World-renowned photographer Breytenbach dies

World-renowned South African photographer, Cloete Breytenbach, has passed away aged 85, in a Cape Town Hospital.

Breytenbach’s iconic photographs have told the story of many people’s lives and events of South Africa since the 1950’s.

This includes documenting the world’s first heart transplant at Cape Town’s Groote Schuur Hospital.

His visual library also includes documenting the residents and capturing the spirit of District Six during apartheid.

Breytenbach also photographed former President Nelson Mandela during his incarceration on Robben Island.

He covered conflicts across Africa including Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

His works have been exhibited all over the world, most recently in Porto, Portugal.
