Reading Time: 5 minutes

World leaders have used social media to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin authorised a special military operation in Eastern parts of Ukraine on Thursday.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged Putin to stop troops from attacking Ukraine.

“Tonight, I have only one thing to say, from the bottom of my heart. President Putin, stop your troops from attacking Ukraine. Give peace a chance. Too many people have already died.

European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen says they will not let Putin tear down Europe’s security architecture.

“He should not underestimate the resolve and strength of our democracies. The European Union stands with Ukraine and its people. Ukraine will prevail.”

Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says NATO Allies condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s horrifying attack on Ukraine, which is entirely unjustified and unprovoked.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine. Russia’s actions pose a serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security”

Response from heads of states

United States President Joe Biden condemned attacks by Russian military forces.

Biden says, “(Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy reached out to me tonight and we just finished speaking. I condemned this unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces. I briefed him on the steps we are taking to rally international condemnation, including tonight at the UN Security Council.”

“He asked me to call on the leaders of the world to speak out clearly against President Putin’s flagrant aggression, and to stand with the people of Ukraine…Tomorrow, I will be meeting with the Leaders of the G7, and the United States and our Allies and partners will be imposing severe sanctions on Russia.”

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he is appalled by the horrific events in Ukraine and has  spoken to  Zelenskyy to discuss next steps.

“President Putin has chosen a path of bloodshed and destruction by launching this unprovoked attack on Ukraine. The UK and our allies will respond decisively.”

‘Unwavering support’

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has reaffirmed with Ukranian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal their support.

“A warm call with Ukrainian PM Shmyhal last night. I reaffirmed Australia’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and denounced Russia’s aggression. I outlined Australia’s acts to sanction Russian individuals, organisations and banks. We will stand firm with Ukraine.”

France President Emmanuel Macron has strongly condemned Russia’s decision to wage war on Ukraine.

“Russia must immediately end its military operations. France stands in solidarity with Ukraine. It stands by the Ukrainians and acts with its partners and allies to put an end to the war.”

Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz says the Russian attack on Ukraine is a blatant breach of international law.

“Nothing can justify him. Germany strongly condemns this reckless act by President Putin. Our solidarity is with Ukraine and its people. Russia must stop this military action immediately. Today we will coordinate closely within the framework of the G7, NATO and the EU. This is a terrible day for Ukraine and a dark day for Europe. “
