This day was declared by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation to highlighting the plight of hunger and poverty across the world.

Wednesday the world celebrates World Food Day. The day focuses on awareness about issues of hunger and malnutrition facing the world.

To celebrate this day, Meals on Wheels Community Service South Africa (MOWCS) is hosting a major cooking event to cook at least 10 000 meals and feed the needy.

This day, October 16, was declared by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation to highlighting hunger and poverty across the world.

Meals on Wheels CEO, Effort Bhebhe says the food will be distributed to beneficiaries in the different areas.

“As meals on wheels, we are focusing a lot on our beneficiaries in rural areas. The 10 000 meals are nutritious – guided by a master chef who is guiding the 20 teams.  At least 4000 meals are going to beneficiaries from the department of education; the other 4000 are going to beneficiaries from the department of social development in Gauteng. We are also doing this programme in Nasrec – Johannesburg.”
