Reading Time: < 1 minute

Today marks World Children’s Day. Declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, the day is aimed at pushing governments to pay more attention to the welfare of their youngest citizens.

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is commemorating the day by emphasising that it’s a day for children, by children, to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them to fulfill their potential.

UNICEF South Africa’s, Sudeshan Reddy believes that the day is an opportunity to assess the plight of children worldwide. “We must accept that progress has been made, more and more children have access to good health, good education and clean running water. But the challenges remain.”
