Workers in the automotive sector will receive an 8.5% salary increase for this year. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and the employer’s body the Automobile Manufacturers Employers Organisation (AMEO), signed the deal following protracted wage negotiations.

In terms of the deal, workers will receive a 7% wage increase in the second and third years. The deal will also include a once-off gratuity of R10 000. The agreement is valid until 30 June 2025.

The union says workers can expect back pay from July to September at the end of the month.

In June NUMSA was requesting a double-digit wage increase. The trade union had requested salary increases of up to 20% for workers in the automotive industry.
