Inheriting an almost divided nation, which was recovering from the recalling and resignation of Thabo Mbeki, adjusting the efforts of Kgalema Motlanthe’s effort to bring stability, and preparing for a new president, it came as no surprise when the “nation” became the focus of Zuma’s inaugural speech in 2009.
Recalling Mandela’s tenure as president of the country, Zuma said: “He (Madiba) set us on the path of nation building and prosperity and made us a respected member of the world community of nations.”
He further assured the nation: “We will not deviate from that nation-building task … I commit myself to the service of our nation with dedication, commitment, discipline, integrity, hard work and passion.”
