President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address at the National Women’s Day commemoration in Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal. August 9 was declared National Women’s Day in South Africa in 1994 to commemorate women’s struggle against oppression. It was on this day in 1956 that twenty-thousand women marched to the Union Buildings, to protest against Pass Laws.
