The biggest losers in the African National Congress’ (ANC) closely contested leadership race are the Women’s League as well as KwaZulu-Natal.

The results of the election, which has seen Cyril Ramaphosa ascend to the top job with Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza as his deputy, were announced Monday night.

Of the six newly elected national officials of the ANC, one is a woman, Jessie Duarte in the position of Deputy Secretary General.

This is despite the fact that three of the candidates that were vying for the Presidency were women.

This represents a 50% reduction in the representation of women from the last top six which had Duarte and former Chairperson Baleka Mbete.

KwaZulu-Natal with the largest delegation at the conference, 804 delegates, was unable to secure a single position with their candidate for Secretary General Senzo Mchunu losing out to Free State Premier Ace Magashule.
