Wits need strengthening right through squad: Hunt

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says he needs to strengthen his entire squad if they want to pose a stronger challenge on more fronts next season.

The Students ended third in the Absa Premiership in the 2018/19 campaign, despite leading the standings for most of the way.

They also reached the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout, while they were beaten in the quarter-final stage of the Nedbank Cup.

Hunt believes they need plenty of new faces if they are to make another strong push for the championship next year, adding that signings would all be made by upper management.

Hunt says his big problem are in defence, where he had some key injuries this past season, particularly to captain Thulani Hlatshwayo for some vital games during the season.

That hurt them in the latter part of the campaign as they allowed champions Mamelodi Sundowns and runners-up Orlando Pirates to eventually overhaul them.

Overall, they did end with the third-best defensive record, with 29 goals conceded, but more than half of those came in the last 11 games.

The veteran Wits mentor says he was only happy with his backline in the first round of the season.

Hunt says the club has already made some new signings, but stopped short of brandishing any names.

Earlier this year, they had confirmed the capture of Ajax Cape Town duo Brandon Petersen and Prince Nxumalo on pre-contracts, while Sinethemba Jantjie was set to join prior to his passing in a motor vehicle accident.

Hunt says they do need far more players, though, and hopes to land them in the coming weeks.

While the signings are set to start coming in during the close season ahead, there are also expected to be departures, like Darren Keet, who is reportedly set to leave the club on a free transfer.

Hunt nonetheless wants to bring in players in all areas for his side, saying it will create further competition within the group. – Report by Thahir Asmal
